How this started
It was 3 PM on a Tuesday. An elderly woman sat in front of our founder, Dr. Kory Kindle. She held her chest, and her eyes were wide with fear. She spoke only Mandarin. He spoke none.
He called the interpreter line. She watched him wait through four minutes of hold music. When the interpreter finally joined, the call had background noise and static. The interpreter asked, “can you repeat that?” twice.
I watched her trust evaporate. And I knew I had to fix this.
Kory brought the medical experience. Our co-founder, Ishan Ahuja, brought years of experience building fast AI systems. They built a first version and took it to firefighters. Then they rebuilt it around what crews asked for: Can it work offline? Can it find the language on its own? Can it write the chart?
That’s the product we’re launching today.
What vitalvoice does
vitalvoice is an iOS app for fire departments and EMS agencies. It works on the phones and rig iPads crews already carry. It helps crews understand patients and finish reports:
- Ambient Scribe — vitalvoice listens during the patient encounter. It drafts the narrative in your department’s exact template, including its sections, headings, terminology, and call-type rules. SOAP, CHART, DCHART, and DRAATT are starter formats only when your department does not already have one. Your medic reviews, edits, and signs the draft before it reaches the electronic patient care report (ePCR).
- Smart Dictation — speak the details of a refusal, late chart, or inspection report. vitalvoice turns them into a clear draft.
- Translation — get real-time interpretation in 63 languages. The app can find the language when a patient cannot name it. It translates and documents the same encounter at the same time.
These details matter on a real call:
- Works offline — interpretation runs on the device in basements, on rural highways, and in parking garages.
- HIPAA-compliant by design — we sign a Business Associate Agreement (BAA). Transcripts stay on the phone, never reach our servers, and are wiped at the end of each shift.
- No invented facts — if it was not said on scene, it does not go in the draft.
Built with crews, not for them
Every feature above exists because a firefighter or medic asked for it. We ride along with crews. We watch what gets in their way and improve the app.
Early pilots show that we are on the right track. Our CityEMT pilot had a 95% Net Promoter Score (NPS), which measures how likely people are to recommend a product. vitalvoice also has a 5.0 rating on the App Store.
